Meybod home to subterranean watermills

The ancient city of Meybod in Yazd is home to several historical underground watermills.

The ancient city of Meybod in the Iranian central province of Yazd is home to several historical underground watermills.

Out of 22 historical watermills in the city, Asiab-e Mohammad-Abad is the most notable one which is famed as an exemplary hydraulic structure created at a depth of 40 meters on a qanat corridor.

These watermills have dome-shaped roofs with high vestibules to allow camels or other livestock to move back and forth.

According to UNESCO, Meybod is “a remarkable example of the viability and transmission of human beings’ collective thoughts from different generations to the present one.”
